Amen, sister! BTW, about the neighbors... Remember that you were only seeing in as far as you could from the front door. Their kitchens were probably almost as bad as yours. Plus, they likely have one totally junked room where they piled everything they moved from in front of the door.

really interesting observation about the distancing effect of sympathy, susan. and liza, i'm 90% sure she was serious. normally i'm pretty good at being able to gauge a whether a person is just being jokey - she wasn't so much. :P

Do you think the woman was kidding? Because I've said something similar and have been completely and utterly kidding. Because you know me, I have no pity. :)

Sympathy is overrated anyway. Empathy is great, where one person really connects with the actual feelings of another. But sympathy, I think, emphasizes the distance, or difference, between the people, and the superiority of the sympathetic one.

Thank you eleven bee AND carol for making a stand where it really counts. This ("gifting", "messaging", "imaging") drives me freakin' nuts. These abominations are like land mines that blow up a legitimate attempt to communicate. (How's that for "imaging"?)

Most annoying phrase going? "Gifting." Huh? Whatever happened to the word "give?" As in, "My mom gave me a great Christmas gift?" Now, every ad would have you think you're supposed to say, "My mom gifted me with a great Christmas gift." Makes people sound like idiots!

I understand talking about "gifted students," or being "gifted" in an esoteric area (sports, music, art). But to use it for physical things that we hand one another - PLEASE!!!!

Let's re-introduce the words "give," "giving," and "gave" to common English usage.
